Does a vehicle's A/C expansion valve make a normal "hissing" noise?
I have an 03' IS300, still under warranty and trying to work out any issues before warranty expires. NOT when car was new, but starting about 6 months ago, I started hearing a faint, high pitch "hissing" noise from inside the cabin when the A/C is on. You can only hear it when the fan is on "low" AND A/C is ON. Aside from the noise, A/C works fine. Recently it seems to be slightly louder and I can hear it at fan setting 2 of 4.
After a bit of research, I have read that some have interpreted this as a normal expansion valve noise and others say slightly low refrigerant or leak. I can't say I have noticed this noise on other cars but this car is pretty quiet and allows you to notice stuff like that. When it gets too annoying, I simply turn the fan speed up. Is it really normal? Why no noise when new? What do you think?

I had a similar problem with a dodge dakota. It was a harmonic sound that I was hearing. Turning the fan to a higher speed changed the pitch of the harmonic so that I no longer noticed the sound. A leaf had got stuck in the blower wheel and was causing the harmonic. How the leaf got there is still a mystery. Good luck
